Polaris is the new HMI designed for Uteco’s new line of machines.
Uteco Converting S.p.A. is a company headquartered in Colognola ai Colli, in the province of Verona, but operates globally thanks to its offices in North America and Dubai. It is a B2B company that manufactures industrial printing presses. Its main products are flexographic printing presses.
In 2023, the company launched its new range of machines with the debut of the first OnyxGo. Along with the redesign of the physical machine, Uteco also invested in significant technological innovations, including a complete redesign of the machine’s electronics and, consequently, of the human-machine interface (HMI).
This project required a particular focus on users’ actual needs, operators’ work methods, and the difficulties encountered when using the old interface.
Among the main pain points, disorganized information and unclear commands proved to be the greatest challenges, particularly for less experienced users.
After months of interviews, workshops, and working alongside operators, we designed a completely new workflow that separated operations based on the printing phase, displaying on each screen only the commands relevant to that specific phase.
Each phase was designed with specific to-do lists, so that the operator could be guided step-by-step without getting lost in the commands. In addition, we designed different interfaces depending on the user accessing the HMI, in order to differentiate roles and ensure both physical and digital security.
A custom Design System was developed to adapt the interface to Uteco’s visual identity while ensuring it remained clear and intuitive for every user.
